Cartonnage of Panehsy

 Cartonnage of Panehsy

The mummy shell of the priest Panehsy is a very beautiful specimen. It is decorated with winged figures of gods and hieroglyphs. These paintings have a general protective meaning. The back of the sleeve features a djed pillar, the Egyptian symbol for sustainability and eternal existence.

This tight-fitting mummy sleeve is made of layers of linen with plaster (cartonnage). The material of such a sleeve consisted of linen soaked in gum Arabic. It was then plastered, pulled around the mummy and tied at the back with laces. The sleeve was painted in all kinds of colors and often decorated with gold leaf.

Finally, the wooden beard is inlaid with blue pieces of probably glass.
